Subcontracts

Subcontracts are legal agreements between the University of Arizona and the subcontracting agency utilizing grant funds. These agreements are written into grant budgets at the proposal stage, using estimated costs provided by the subcontracting agency.

The life of a subcontract begins at the proposed stage; this includes establshing an agreed upon budget and deliverables with the subaward recipient agreement form.

To establish a subcontract, please work with your Portfolio Coordinator, who will initiate this process with the Sponsored Projects Subcontracting Team. Your Portfolio Coordinator will also need the contact information of the designated business personnel who will handle the subcontract at the company or other institution.

How long will it take to establish a subcontract?
The process usually takes 8 to 10 weeks from the time initiated. This estimate is based on all parties communicating in a timely manner.

How do subcontractors get paid?
Subcontracts are initiated with a Purchase Order. Therefore, subcontractors will need to provide invoicing and background documentation on a schedule provided in their contract.
